Trama
Per rispondere alla serie di Godzilla della rivale Toho e al successo de Gli Uccelli il presidente della Daiei pensò a un film con dei ratti vivi ma fu costretto a ripiegare sull’idea di una tartaruga gigante di fronte all’opposizione degli ispettori sanitari. Nonostante lo scarso budget rispetto a quello della Toho e un regista con all’attivo solo una fallimentare commedia musicale, Gamera fu un grandioso successo al botteghino e diede origine a ben sette sequel.
Following the success of rival Toho’s Godzilla series and Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller The Birds (1963) with Japanese audiences, the president of Daiei initially conceived a film featuring live rats, but was forced to settle on the idea of a giant turtle in the face of opposition from health inspectors. Despite having a much smaller budget than Toho and a director with only one failed musical comedy to his name, Gamera was a huge box-office hit and spawned no fewer than seven sequels.
